Sigma has announced the 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art lens, a large-aperture fast zoom lens for APS-C systems. It will be available for L-mount (Leica, Panasonic and Sigma), X-mount (Fujifilm), E-mount (Sony) and RF-mount (Canon).

This lens is essentially a spiritual successor to the Sigma’s fantastic 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens launched 12 years ago. I reviewed it back when I was in Straits Times, and gave it the Editor’s Choice due to its sharp optics and affordability.

Like its predecessor, the new 17-40mm lens features an internal zoom design so the lens stays the same length at all times. Not to mention, it offers a dust- and moisture-resistant design.
There will be differences between the different mounts of this same lens, in order to cater to each brand’s needs or requirements. For instance, the RF-mount version will have a customisable control ring instead of an aperture ring. On the other hand, the X-mount version will have an autofocusing (AF) function button that can be used to select AF Lock/AF operation via lens switch.

This is one lens that I am really excited about, as the ultra-big aperture allows for low-light photography as well as superb bokeh effects. It is a pity there will be no Z-mount (Nikon) support though.
The Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art lens (for the L-mount, X-mount and E-mount) will be available in Singapore at a price of S$1,288 from 10 July 2025 onwards. The RF-mount version will only be available in August 2025 at the same price.
