Ricoh GR IV finally here after seven-year wait [Updated with local pricing and availability]

Ricoh’s beloved GR digital compact prosumer camera finally has a successor with the arrival of GR IV ending a seven-year wait. Its predecessor, the GR III, was launched in 2018.

The GR IV now packs a 25.7-megapixel (MP) backside-illuminated APS-C image sensor (up from 24MP frontside-illuminated one found in GR III) for better image quality, a new image processor for enhanced noise reduction and more accurate colour reproduction as well as a redesigned 28mm f2.8 lens with an additional aspherical element for better details.

The stabilisation system of the image sensor has also been upgraded from three-axis in GR III to five-axis for improved image stabilisation. In addition, internal storage has been increased to 53GB in GR IV, a massive upgrade from the paltry 2GB of GR III. Perhaps, the battery has gone bigger, as the CIPA battery rating is now 250 shots compared to 200 previously. Maybe that’s why the GR IV now supports microSD card, instead of SD card.

Design wise, the GR IV looks the same. It still has a 3-inch rear screen. But until I get a review unit, I shall not comment further. However, officially, the GR IV is 5g heavier than its predecessor.

Local pricing and availability are yet to be confirmed. However, The Ricoh GR IV will be available in the US from mid-September 2025 at US$1,499, which is a significant increase from GR III’s US$899. In Singapore, the GR IV will retail at S$1,799 and available from 12 September 2025 onwards. This represents a $400 increase from GR III. Not too bad, I feel.

I hope to get the review unit of GR IV soon!
