Sony launches A7 V and new 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens

Sony Alpha fans, rejoice! The new A7 V has officially landed, and it’s looking like one of the biggest jumps the A7 lineup has seen in years. Alongside it, Sony also dropped an updated zoom kit lens, the FE 28‑70mm F3.5‑5.6 OSS II, built to keep up with the camera’s improved shooting speeds.

If you’ve been waiting for a capable hybrid camera that leans into AI in a meaningful way, this might be the camera you want. Sony stuffed a newly developed partially stacked Exmor RS 33-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor as well as a new artificial intelligence (AI) processing unit in its upgraded BIONZ XR2 image processor. As such, the A7 V now recognises subjects up to 30% better, and with 759 phase‑detect points covering most of the frame, it feels geared to handle pretty much anything you can throw at it.

The A7 V is clearly built for fast shooters. It fires off 60 AF/AE calculations every second and can shoot 30 fps blackout‑free, even in 14‑bit RAW. Wildlife and sports folks will appreciate the new Pre‑Capture mode too, as it buffers up to 1 second before you hit the shutter. Great for birds, pets, or unpredictable humans. Not to mention, it even stays confident down to EV -4.0, meaning low‑light shooters aren’t left behind.

Sony claims up to 16 stops of dynamic range, which is already impressive. But the new AI-driven Auto White Balance is said to analyse scenes smarter, predicts light sources, and produces more natural colors without you needing to fight the file later in post.

On the video side, Sony’s aiming squarely at hybrid creators with 7K oversampled 4K 60p (full‑frame), 4K 120p in Super 35, zero pixel binning, improved Dynamic Active Mode stabilisation, AI Auto Framing for the solo shooters and better in‑camera noise reduction and internal microphones. This feels like the sweet spot for creators who want flexibility without jumping all the way to an A7S model.

Sony didn’t forget about ergonomics and workflow either. The A7 V comes with Wi‑Fi 6E for faster transfers, dual USB‑C ports, a four‑axis multi‑angle screen (finally!), better grip comfort and improved battery life and thermals.

The zoom kit lens gets refreshed too. The FE 28‑70mm F3.5‑5.6 OSS II lens is now lighter, quicker, and ready for up to 120 fps AF/AE tracking with supported bodies. It also plays nicer with breathing compensation and offers steadier video performance thanks to coordinated stabilisation. Nothing flashy, but very practical.

The Sony A7 V starts at S$3,699 (body only), and will be available end of December 2025. The kit version and the new FE 28‑70mm OSS II lens will arrive February 2026, with pricing yet to be confirmed.
