Leica has officially expanded its SL-System lineup with the introduction of its most advanced full-frame camera to date: the Leica SL3-P. Ditching the iconic red dot for a minimalist, all-black stealth look, this powerhouse shooter arrives alongside two new SL lenses – the Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH and the APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100mm f/2.8.

(Photo: Leica)

Designed for both professional photographers and videographers, the SL3-P pairs Leica’s signature German craftsmanship with cutting-edge hybrid capabilities. It sports a solid, full-metal body with IP54 dust- and water-splash protection, making it rugged enough for demanding field environments. Visually, it stands out by blending in – featuring a clean design with blacked-out control elements and no red Leica logo.

Inside, SL3-P is packed with serious imaging tech:

44-Megapixel (MP) BSI Sensor: Delivers an impressive 14 stops of dynamic range and an ISO range spanning 50 to 200,000.

176MP Multishot Mode: For landscape or studio photographers needing extreme detail, the camera can shift its sensor to output massive 176-megapixel files.

New Hybrid Autofocus System: Combines Phase Detection (PDAF), object detection (depth mapping), and contrast detection across 819 AF points for lightning-fast tracking.

40 frames per second (fps) Burst Shooting: Captures fast-moving action with full autofocus support.

For videographers, the SL3-P serves up massive upgrades. It supports 8.1K Open Gate (3:2) at up to 24p utilising the full sensor, as well as standard 8K at 30p and HDMI RAW output. For high-frame-rate capture, it handles 5.9K at 60fps and 4K slow-motion at 120fps.

The Leica SL3-P with the new APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100mm f/2.8 lens. (Photo: Leica)

The camera integrates Apple ProRes codec support (up to 5.8K) and introduces two new in-camera LUTs—Leica Pure and Leica Cine. Navigating between modes is made simple via a colour-coded user interface (red for photos, yellow for videos) that automatically rotates on the high-resolution tilting touchscreen.

Leica also gave a peek at two upcoming lenses arriving later this year:

Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH: Claimed to be the world’s most compact autofocus lens of its focal length and speed. Weighing just 584g and measuring 75.5mm long, it features 11 aperture blades for creamy bokeh and an IP54-rated full-metal body.

APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100mm f/2.8: A modern homage to the legendary 1987 R-system macro classic. It offers a 1:1 reproduction ratio, a 30cm close-focusing distance, and apochromatic correction for razor-sharp edge-to-edge performance.

The Leica SL3-P is available starting today, 25 June 2026, at Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store, and authorised dealers. The new lenses will follow at the end of 2026. Interestingly, Leica is also offering the SL3-P in three enticing kit deals, as you can see in the table below. If you have the moolah, it is well worth it!

Insta360 has officially marked its aggressive entry into the dedicated handheld gimbal camera segment with the announcement of its new flagship device, the Luna Ultra. Co-engineered in an ongoing partnership with German optics pioneer Leica, the pocketable camera packs an 1-inch image sensor, 8K video capture, and a modular ecosystem designed for next-generation mobile filmmaking. Aimed squarely at everyday creators and solo filmmakers, the device boasts a robust 3-axis mechanical stabilisation framework to achieve cinematic fluidity during heavy physical movement.

The Insta360 Luna Ultra comes in black and white. (Photo: Insta360)

At the heart of the Luna Ultra’s imaging capability is a premium Leica Summicron lens setup comprising the large 1-inch 37-megapixel image sensor capable of native 8K resolution video at 30fps with Dolby Vision. To expand the creative canvas, Insta360 has opted for a versatile dual-lens configuration. The secondary optics group features a pro-grade telephoto lens system utilising a 1/1.3-inch sensor and a bright F2.0 aperture, allowing the camera to move smoothly across five discrete focal lengths with up to 12x zoom (6x lossless).

To process the immense throughput of 8K video data, the Luna Ultra integrates a newly engineered “Triple AI Chip”. This advanced processing unit enables superior low-light optimisation through a dedicated PureVideo Mode up to 4K60fps, while delivering an impressive 14 stops of dynamic range. Video workflows heavily target professional studio environments, supporting 10-bit I-Log capture, built-in timecode generator hardware for seamless multi-camera synchronisation, and native Leica colour profiles.

The Luna Ultra is compact and lightweight, making it the perfect companion for your travels. (Photo: Insta360)

Physically, the device prioritises ultra-portable ergonomics, tipping the scales at just over 200g. In a notable architectural departure from standard fixed-screen gimbal devices, the Luna Ultra introduces an industry-first detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen. Operating on high-definition wireless transmission technology, the screen handles remote monitoring and full camera controls at distances extending up to 20 meters away for flexible solo shooting.

The device is powered by a 1550mAh battery said to last up to four hours of continuous usage, with rapid charging capabilities that goes from zero to 80% in approximately 23 minutes. For audio and storage, the camera features an integrated mechanical wind guard, direct compatibility with Insta360 mic systems, and 47GB of internal high-speed usable storage (expandable up to 1TB via microSD). On the software front, Deep Track 5.0 algorithms power smart subject tracking and framing.

A sample photo taken by Luna Ultra distributed by Insta360.
The debut of the camera celebrates a six-year cooperative imaging alliance between Insta360 and Leica, marking their fifth joint hardware deployment.
German premium photography equipment maker Leica has expanded its home cinema lineup with the announcement of the Leica Cine Compact 1. It is a premium, plug-and-play mini projector designed to deliver a high-end cinema experience anywhere from living rooms to outdoor terraces.

Despite its highly portable footprint, the device uses state-of-the-art Triple RGB laser technology, a 0.47-inch DMD image chip, and a premium Leica Summicron zoom lens with aspherical elements to project razor-sharp 4K images up to 220 inches with a brightness of 1,700 lumens. To ensure pristine visual quality across different surfaces, the projector features Leica Image Optimization (LIOT) technology alongside native Dolby Vision support for precise contrasts and fluid brightness transitions.

An optional stand for this projector provides additional flexibility, (Photo: Leica)

A standout feature of the Cine Compact 1 is its built-in 360-degree rotation system, allowing it to effortlessly project media onto walls, angled partitions, or ceilings without requiring a permanent screen setup. Physical configuration is entirely hands-off, thanks to an automated software suite that instantly handles autofocus, zoom, keystone correction, and intelligent screen framing. It also includes a standard tripod thread for ceiling mounting and offers an optional elegant dedicated stand.

On the smart and audio side, the projector runs on the VIDAA operating system for direct access to streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, and integrates seamlessly into smart homes via Apple AirPlay, Apple HomeKit, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.4. Its built-in speakers deliver immersive cinematic sound with Dolby Digital Plus and DTS Virtual:X, which can also be paired wirelessly with external audio setups.

(Photo: Leica)

Embodying a durable, Bauhaus-style aluminium housing with an elegant glass front, the energy-efficient projector is built for longevity. Moving away from disposable packaging, Leica ships the device in a sustainable, fully recyclable EPP transport case for safe and convenient mobile storage.

The Leica Cine Compact 1 will be available in Singapore on June 18, 2026, for a recommended retail price of S$2,400.

There are smartphones that take excellent photos. There are even smartphones that want to replace compact cameras. And then there is the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi, a device that approaches smartphone photography from an altogether different philosophical starting point.

This isn’t just another flagship with a big image sensor and some artificial intelligence (AI) buzzwords slapped on top. Leica appears to have asked a more fundamental question: What should a Leica phone feel like to a photographer? The answer is not merely technical. It is aesthetic, tactile, and intentional.

What you get out of the box.: Leiztphone and its accessories, including a lens cap that works only with the phone case here. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

The design of Leitzphone distinguishes itself immediately, albeit sharing the same shell as Xiaomi 17 Ultra. Where many contemporary flagships lean toward glossy spectacle, Leica opts for restraint. The rear panel is finished in black fibreglass, subtly textured and deliberately understated. A knurled metal frame adds grip and a tactile nod to traditional camera bodies. And in one corner sits the unmistakable red dot – no longer absent from Xiaomi hardware, but fully endorsed here.

The device is unapologetically substantial. At over 220g with a prominent circular camera module, it does not pretend to be delicate. Instead, it embraces its identity as a tool. It feels closer to a photographic instrument than a lifestyle accessory. This industrial clarity of purpose is reinforced by the included accessories — notably a case with a lens cap and wrist strap — small gestures that further blur the line between smartphone and camera.

The iconic red dot of Leica gives plenty of brownie points to the Leitzphone. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

One of the Leitzphone’s most distinctive features is the rotating camera ring encircling the lens module. It can be configured to adjust zoom, exposure, or Leica colour profiles, and even to launch the camera application.

The rotating ring is one distinctive feature of the Leitzphone. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

In theory, it introduces a welcome physicality to mobile photography — an antidote to purely on-screen interaction. In practice, opinions are divided. Some find the tactile engagement satisfying and precise; some consider it too easy to rotate inadvertently and less intuitive than on-screen controls. I find it to certainly a good-to-have, but not essential.

Yet, the ambition is noteworthy. Smartphone makers are less willing to experiment with mechanical interaction in a category increasingly defined by software abstraction. Leica’s willingness to attempt something different is itself a statement.

Beneath its refined exterior, the Leitzphone shares its core imaging hardware with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. The main camera features a 50-megapixel (MP) 1-inch Light Fusion 1050L image sensor paired with a large-aperture ƒ/1.7 lens. Crucially, it incorporates LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology, designed to expand dynamic range by improving highlight retention.

This strap is very difficult to string through the tiny holes of the accompanying case. But it certainly helps to prevent dropping the phone. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

The telephoto module is equally ambitious with a 200MP image sensor coupled with a mechanically moving 75–100mm optical zoom. Rather than switching between fixed focal lengths or relying heavily on digital cropping, the lens physically shifts within that range. While 25mm of zoom range may appear modest on paper, it places the phone squarely within classic portrait territory.

The ultra-wide-angle and front-facing cameras complete the array, but it is the interplay between the 1-inch main image sensor and the mechanical telephoto that defines the Leitzphone’s photographic character. You can see the zoom range of the Leitzphone below.

The most consequential innovation here may not be the mechanical zoom but LOFIC technology in the main sensor. Highlight control, long a weakness of smartphone photography, is markedly improved. Bright skies retain texture. Artificial lighting at night resists clipping. Shadows remain rich without being artificially lifted to the point of sterility.

You can even see the details in the shadow areas in this challenging lighting condition photo taken by the Leitzphone. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

There is, however, a caveat: LOFIC is present only on the main camera. As a result, the telephoto and ultra-wide-angle lenses cannot always match its dynamic range performance perfectly. The disparity is subtle but noticeable in challenging lighting conditions.

This cute cat is taken with the Leica Leitzphone. Somehow, it is cuter here. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

If hardware provides the structure, software supplies the soul. The Leitzphone expands upon Xiaomi’s existing Leica collaboration by introducing additional Leica-specific modes and filters. Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant serve as overarching colour profiles, while a broader array of Leica Looks, including Chrome, Classic, Contemporary, Brass, and Monochrome High Contrast, allow for nuanced stylistic control.

You can easily switch between the different Leica colour profiles. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

Particularly noteworthy is Leica Essential mode, which emulates the color rendering of the Leica M9 and the monochrome aesthetic of the M3 paired with Monopan 50 film. These are not superficial filters; they are carefully tuned simulations that encourage intentional shooting.

For photographers inclined toward black-and-white street work or filmic tonal restraint, these modes are more than novelty. They offer a distinctive visual identity directly out of camera.

I love the Monochrome High Contrast profile. It is great for street photography like this one taken using it. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

Beyond imaging, the Leitzphone is a fully realized flagship. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage, performance is fluid and uncompromising. The 6.9-inch LTPO OLED display is bright, sharp, and well-suited to reviewing images in detail.

Battery capacity stands at 6,000mAh with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging. While endurance is solid, intensive photography sessions can deplete the battery quickly. It remains reliable for a full day of typical use, though not exceptional within its class.

I find the Leitzphone great for street photography, which is always my first love. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

In Singapore, at S$2,299, the Leitzphone is S$500 more expensive than the Xiaomi 17 Ultra (though the Xiaomi model has a smaller 512GB storage compared to Leitzphone’s 1TB). The Leitzphone’s additional cost is attributable to its design refinements, Leica-exclusive software elements, and branding. Whether that premium is justified depends less on specifications and more on sensibility. Leica has never competed on price; it competes on experience.

VERDICT: The Leica Leitzphone is not simply a smartphone with a large sensor. It is a deliberate exploration of what mobile photography can be when guided by a century-old camera philosophy.

The Leica Leitzphone is a smartphone camera that can work as your daily workhorse as well. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

It prioritises mood over maximal processing, tonal depth over exaggerated HDR, and tactile engagement over purely digital interaction. It is imperfect – occasionally inconsistent across lenses, ambitious but not always practical in its mechanical features. Yet, it remains one of the most compelling camera phones now.

In an era of incremental upgrades and algorithmic polish, the Leitzphone stands apart not because it is flawless, but because it dares to feel intentional. For those who value photography not merely as documentation but as craft, that distinction may be enough.

Leica M EV1 review: Trevor Tan tests Leica’s first M without a rangefinder. Does the electronic viewfinder redefine the M experience? Explore image quality, handling, price and whether the EV1 is worth the moolah for modern photographers.

In the long arc of Leica’s M story, the M EV1 feels less like a new chapter and more like a fork in the road. Announced last October, it is the first M without a rangefinder, replacing the optical window with a built-in 5.76‑million‑dot OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF). For traditionalists, that single specification borders on heresy. For others, it is liberation.

For this review, Leica loaned me the Summilux‑M 50mm f/1.4 Glossy Black (S$6,550, get it at Leica Store) to use with the M EV1. Fantastic combination. Period.

Back to the camera. At its core, the M EV1 is built on familiar foundations. It carries the same 60MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor and Maestro III processor as the M11, complete with Leica’s Triple Resolution Technology (60MP, 36MP or 18MP in DNG or JPEG). Image quality, as expected, is not in question. It is going to be excellent, only the photographer will fail the camera.

(Photo: Trevor Tan)

What has changed is how you see. The EVF — similar in spirit to the Q3 — offers real-time exposure preview, focus peaking and magnification. These are tools a traditional optical rangefinder simply cannot provide. The familiar front lever, once used for frame-line preview, is now programmable for focus assist or digital zoom. Mechanically, it still feels like an M. Experientially, it is decisively electronic.

The front lever now is a programmable lever for digital zoom or focus assist. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

Physically, the EV1 remains unmistakably Leica. The milled metal chassis, handmade in Germany, retains that dense, reassuring weight. There is 64GB of internal storage alongside SD support, plus Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi connectivity via the Leica FOTOS app. In the hand, it is still every inch an M.

The SD card slot can be found in the bottom battery compartment. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

In essence, this is an M11 reimagined around an EVF. But that shift changes more than it sounds. With an EVF, the M EV1 becomes far more versatile. Ultra-wides, longer focal lengths and even close-up work will feel more precise and less compromised. Focus peaking and magnification remove guesswork. Real-time exposure preview shows you exactly what you are getting. When shooting wide open at f/1.4, the margin for error is razor thin — and the EV1 makes that margin visible.

This is not about bad eyesight (though for middle-age guys with failing eyesight like myself, I will admit the clarity helps), it is about accuracy. It is about seeing depth of field and critical focus in real time, rather than trusting calibration and muscle memory.

Shot taken with M EV1: Using M EV1 for street photography is a joy to behold. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

Using the M EV1, I could not escape the feeling that this is a turning point — not because it replaces the traditional M, but because it reframes what an M can be. There is a growing group of photographers who value precision over ritual. For them, the EV1 does not reject heritage; it offers an alternative path through it.

Shot taken with M EV1: The EVF allows you to know that your focus is in focus. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

In use, it is arguably the most straightforward M I have handled. The experience feels closer to a Q3 (including the leatherette feel) in temperament — responsive, clear, confident — but with the freedom of the M mount. The EVF is crisp and immersive, and after extended use, it stops feeling like a compromise and starts feeling like clarity.

Still, the debate is inevitable. For many long-time M users, removing the rangefinder removes the soul. The M has historically been defined by its mechanically coupled focusing system — the bright-line frames, the discipline of alignment, the tactile ritual. That identity shaped generations of photographers.

Shot taken with M EV1: Another shot with the excellent M EV1. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

The M EV1 asks a philosophical question: Is the M defined by its mount, or by its rangefinder?

Leica has faced resistance before, such as the M8’s move to CMOS, or the M11’s internal storage. The company evolves slowly, but it certainly evolves. Importantly, the EV1 does not replace the optical M. It exists alongside it. Traditional rangefinder models remain for those who want the classic experience. The EV1 is simply another option.

Shot taken with M EV1: The obligatory selfie with the Leica camera. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

Then there is the price: S$11,950 (body only). Very expensive. At nearly twelve thousand dollars, it competes not just with other Leicas but with highly capable mirrorless systems offering faster autofocus, higher burst rates and extensive video features. But Leica has never competed on feature density but on reduction.

VERDICT: The Leica M EV1 is not a betrayal. It is a clarification. It strips away the romance of the optical finder and asks a harder question – if you remove the ritual, does the image improve?

The Leica M EV1 is a rangefinder without a rangefinder. (Photo: Trevor Tan)

For photographers who demand critical focus at shallow depth of field, the answer may well be yes. For others, the rangefinder remains the point. The quiet genius of the EV1 is that it does not end the debate about what an M should be. It makes that debate explicit. And at this level, no Leica has ever been a casual decision.
