The Alpha 7R VI (A7R VI) is the sixth generation of Sony’s high-resolution Alpha 7R series. It features a newly developed approximately 66.8-megapixel back-illuminated, fully-stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor paired with Sony’s new BIONZ XR2 processing engine. Its maker claims the combination allows A7R VI to deliver exceptional resolution with up to 16 stops of dynamic range (at low sensitivities, mechanical shutter), improved mid-range noise performance and accurate colour reproduction. The camera also offers blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second in Hi+ mode with the electronic shutter, supporting up to 60 AF/AE calculations per second.

Autofocus (AF) is powered by an integrated AI processing unit with Real-time Recognition AF+, including skeletal-based human pose estimation for improved subject tracking in sports and other fast-moving scenarios. The A7R VI also features 5-axis in-body image stabilisation rated at up to 8.5 stops at the centre and 7.0 stops at the periphery (CIPA 2024 standards), and a new NP-SA100 high-capacity battery rated for up to 710 shots using the LCD or 600 shots via the viewfinder under CIPA standards.

For video shooters, the A7R VI supports 8K 30p recording with 8.2K oversampling, as well as full-frame 4K at 60p and 120p without crop (when 4K angle of view priority is enabled). Sony says effective heat management allows uninterrupted 8K recording for up to 120 minutes under specified test conditions. A new Dual Gain Shooting function aims to optimise sensor performance for smoother gradation and reduced noise in 4K at 30p or lower.

The A7R VI also supports Sony’s Camera Authenticity Solution, including the C2PA standard, to enable verification that images and videos were captured in-camera rather than generated by AI. Alongside the camera, Sony introduced the XLR-A4 XLR adaptor, which enables up to four-channel digital audio recording and 32-bit float internal recording when used with the Alpha 7R VI.

Meanwhile, Sony also unveiled the FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS, a new G Master super-telephoto zoom designed for full-frame E-mount cameras. Covering a 100–400mm focal range with a constant f/4.5 maximum aperture, the lens is positioned for wildlife, birding, sports and photojournalism. Sony claims autofocus is up to approximately three times faster than the earlier FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens (when mounted on compatible bodies such as the Alpha 9 III, with roughly 50% improved subject tracking under Sony’s test conditions).

The lens’ optical design incorporates newly developed ED XA, XA, two Super ED and three ED elements to control chromatic and spherical aberrations, along with Nano AR Coating II to reduce flare and ghosting. An 11-blade circular aperture is designed to deliver the characteristic G Master bokeh. Other features include built-in optical stabilisation that coordinates with compatible camera bodies, breathing compensation support, four focus hold buttons and a dust- and moisture-resistant design with a fluorine-coated front element.

The lens weighs approximately 1,840g, and uses an inner-zoom design to maintain a constant length and stable centre of gravity throughout the zoom range. It is compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, extending reach up to 800mm or 1,200mm in APS-C mode with the 2.0x converter attached.

Both the Sony Alpha 7R VI (S$5,999, body only) and the FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS (S$5,699) are available for pre-order in Singapore now, with stock for the lens expected from mid-June and camera from end-June. Sony is offering early bird promotions from now to June 4, including bundled accessories and purchase-with-purchase deals for selected lenses, teleconverters and the new vertical grip.
