Canon celebrates 30 years of PowerShot with commemorative PowerShot G7 X Mark III

To celebrate 30 years of Canon’s PowerShot compact camera series, the Japanese imaging giant is releasing a commemorative PowerShot G7 X Mark III.

Since the launch of the first PowerShot in July 1996, the PowerShot series has expanded to cater to different needs. The current PowerShot lineup comprises three series that are tailored to suit different lifestyle needs: the G series with great image quality and rich features in compact lightweight bodies; the V series with advanced video shooting; and the SX series with powerful zoom capabilities.

First launched in August 2019, the PowerShot G7 X Mark III delivers rich imaging capabilities with a 20.1-megapixel 1.0-inch CMOS image sensor, a 4.2x zoom (24-100mm) lens and 3-inch 1.04-million-dot tiltable display.

This special limited quantity commemorative edition comes with an exclusive graphite finish, a knurled control ring, and a distinguished 30th anniversary logo. As you might expect, it also comes with special commemorative packaging and a collector’s edition wrist strap – both with the 30th anniversary logo.

I am a bit disappointed that Canon did not launch a new PowerShot for its 30th anniversary. Instead, it is merely a re-release of a 6-year-old G7 X Mark III with a 30th anniversary badge. I owned a PowerShot G3 more than 20 years ago and really loved the camera. But technology has since advanced pretty quickly and the G7 X Mark III is showing signs of age. I would have hoped for a complete new G series camera with at least an APS-C image sensor.

That said, if you are interested, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III 30th Anniversary Commemorative Edition is priced at S$1,299 ($100 more expensive than the normal version) but availability in Singapore is yet to be confirmed.
