Insta360 Partners Leica to Unveil Luna Ultra – A Premium 1-Inch 8K Gimbal Camera

Insta360 has officially marked its aggressive entry into the dedicated handheld gimbal camera segment with the announcement of its new flagship device, the Luna Ultra. Co-engineered in an ongoing partnership with German optics pioneer Leica, the pocketable camera packs an 1-inch image sensor, 8K video capture, and a modular ecosystem designed for next-generation mobile filmmaking. Aimed squarely at everyday creators and solo filmmakers, the device boasts a robust 3-axis mechanical stabilisation framework to achieve cinematic fluidity during heavy physical movement.

At the heart of the Luna Ultra’s imaging capability is a premium Leica Summicron lens setup comprising the large 1-inch 37-megapixel image sensor capable of native 8K resolution video at 30fps with Dolby Vision. To expand the creative canvas, Insta360 has opted for a versatile dual-lens configuration. The secondary optics group features a pro-grade telephoto lens system utilising a 1/1.3-inch sensor and a bright F2.0 aperture, allowing the camera to move smoothly across five discrete focal lengths with up to 12x zoom (6x lossless).

To process the immense throughput of 8K video data, the Luna Ultra integrates a newly engineered “Triple AI Chip”. This advanced processing unit enables superior low-light optimisation through a dedicated PureVideo Mode up to 4K60fps, while delivering an impressive 14 stops of dynamic range. Video workflows heavily target professional studio environments, supporting 10-bit I-Log capture, built-in timecode generator hardware for seamless multi-camera synchronisation, and native Leica colour profiles.

Physically, the device prioritises ultra-portable ergonomics, tipping the scales at just over 200g. In a notable architectural departure from standard fixed-screen gimbal devices, the Luna Ultra introduces an industry-first detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen. Operating on high-definition wireless transmission technology, the screen handles remote monitoring and full camera controls at distances extending up to 20 meters away for flexible solo shooting.

The device is powered by a 1550mAh battery said to last up to four hours of continuous usage, with rapid charging capabilities that goes from zero to 80% in approximately 23 minutes. For audio and storage, the camera features an integrated mechanical wind guard, direct compatibility with Insta360 mic systems, and 47GB of internal high-speed usable storage (expandable up to 1TB via microSD). On the software front, Deep Track 5.0 algorithms power smart subject tracking and framing.

The debut of the camera celebrates a six-year cooperative imaging alliance between Insta360 and Leica, marking their fifth joint hardware deployment. Coming in two premium finishes of Cosmic Black and Stellar White, the Insta360 Luna Ultra is now available through the official online Insta360 Store, Lazada, Shopee, and select retailers at S$969.
