Sony PlayStation Plus all-new subscription plans have arrived in Singapore yesterday. If you are wondering which PlayStation (PS) Plus subscription to get, here is a quick look at the plans available.

As you can see from the table above, there are three subscription tiers in the revamped PS Plus. The PS Plus Essential (S$8.90 monthly) is basically the current Plus tier. You get two monthly downloadable games, cloud storage for saved games and online multiplayer access.
The PS Plus Extra (S$13.90 monthly) offers all the benefits from the Essential tier but adds a catalogue of up to 400-odd enjoyable PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games that can be downloaded to play. These games include BloodBorne, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Infamous Second Son, Marvel’s Spiderman, The Last of US Remastered as well as third-party titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, NBA 2K22 and The Crew 2.
Singapore does not have PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. As such, we do not have the top-tier PS Plus Premium plan that includes cloud streaming of games. Instead, we get the slightly-cheaper PS Plus Deluxe plan (S$15.90 monthly).
Apart from having what the Extra tier offers, you have access to a catalogue of classic games from the original PS and PSP platforms to download and play as well as time-limited trials of certain games. Some of these original PS and PSP games include Ape Escape, Worms Armageddon and Super Stardust Portable.
The games available for time-limited trials include Uncharted: Legacy of the Thieves Collection, Horizon Forbidden West, Cyberpunk 207, Farming Simulator 22, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland and WE 2K22. You can play most of these games for two hours before you decide to buy it. But the game save data and any trophies you won will carry forward to the purchased game.
It is important to note that games available in the games catalogue of the various tiers will be refreshed over time, so gamers will always have something new to play.
For those who have an annual PS Plus subscription like myself, you can easily upgrade to PS Plus Extra or Deluxe plan by paying a little bit more till the end of your subscription. For instance, I upgraded to the Deluxe plan from the Plus Essential by paying just S$14.93. I only need to pay the full sum when my current plans end in September. Seems like a good deal to me.
However, PushSquare reported that “those who have active PS Plus Essential memberships into, say, 2026 are being quoted the price of four full years in order to upgrade to PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Deluxe.”
PushSquare claimed that there is no way to upgrade for one year to PS Plus Deluxe and return to PS Plus Essential. Furthermore, Sony is alleged to wipe out historical discounts on subscriptions purchased through the PS Store. For instance, if you bought your current PS Plus subscription on a discount and choose to upgrade, Sony has been alleged to bump up the price difference.
I personally have no such experience, since I did not pay for the PS Plus subscription so well ahead in advance. While I do think it is normal for Sony to quote the full price for the upgrades, it is PR madness to make up the price difference for those who got their PS Plus subscription on a discount. I have contacted Sony about this and awaiting their reply.
That said, you will not be affected if you are paying the PS Plus subscription monthly or annually. So, if you think you have no time to play so many games, you might want to stick with the Essential plan and avoid all those controversies.
But if you want access to more PS4 and PS5 games, you can go for the Extra plan. However, if you are a big fan of classic games but yet want to try out the latest games, I think the Deluxe plan might be worth your moolah.
